Hul’q’umi’num’ Program

Our Hul’q’umi’num’ Program is created to provide resources in hul’q’umi’num’ for the use of the community. With the support of Elder Florence James we have created voice recordings and flashcards developed in the Snuneymuxwqun language. We hope to continue adding resources and recordings for public use in order to increase language use and fluency.

I'm Florence James, born on Galiano Island, married on Punelakut Island. I have a son, Rocky James. I work with Hul’q’umi’num’ language to fix, translate and write the stories and songs and books for children. It's from my fluency in the Coast Salish language that I learned is my strength. I'm retiring from Elder in Residence at VIU after 14 years of instruction.
